The railing or banister is an indispensable element for the safety of the inhabitants of a house. Although it can be realized, quite simply, using bars of metal or with a little wood, the staircase railing has also become, over the centuries, an accessory that complements the aspect of the stairs and highlights the beauty. For this reason, many architects and designers pay special attention to the choice of this element. The ramp or railing internal staircase is particularly selected with great care in modern houses with clean decor.

She is a creation of the company Dorrington Architects. For its staircase, the architects have relied on classic and timeless materials. Floating steps are made in particular wood. A metal stair railing is installed on the outside of these. For the interior, we stick to a practical handrail.
A railing metal staircase by Monoloko
The company Monoloko, which our readers already know thanks to our publications, is at the origin of the design and the realization of our second project. It is a modern staircase in white color. To make it safe, the creators at Monoloko opted for a black staircase ramp. This is made of metal bars arranged in a disorganized manner. The railing steel staircase is completed by a light wooden handrail. This material echoes the choice of floor covering on both levels of space. This idea of decoration exudes a Scandinavian atmosphere that is achieved thanks to the combination of white and black color and wooden surfaces.
Wooden and red design stair railing in Sydney
Let’s continue our private tour of interiors around the world with another distant destination: the city of Sydney, Australia. We discover a wooden staircase with ramp of red color. Design white staircase railing in Singapore
After Australia, take a detour to Singapore. This is where our next architect’s house is located. His design is Farm and his name is Wall House. To develop and decorate this house, Farm has experimented with many original approaches. For example, there is a semi open space decorated with concrete and green plants. Probably resuming the idea of Asian interior gardens, it also has a staircase adorned with a railing in white. Its function is to further harmonize the atmosphere within the space. The patterns are chosen to visually increase the size of the space.
Interior wood stair railing by Marc Frones / Theverymany in collaboration with Ammar Eloueini
Corian material is a type of solid and modern surface that is easy to shape. It is this type of material that has been used for the creation of the staircase railing in the project on the picture above. The railing is an invention of Marc Fornes / Theverymany and the architect Amma Eloueini. The color chosen for its manufacture is the immaculate white. This one echoes the mural in the rooms of this interior with open plan. White is often used for the decoration of modern stairs, especially when these are made of wood. In the case illustrated above, the marriage of white and wood is present throughout the house. In addition to certain pieces of furniture, wood is the surface used by decorators for flooring.
Wooden and metal stair railing by Finne Architects
Another popular solution for wood stair railing is metal. It is precisely this material that has been selected by Finne Architects to decorate the interior of the Mazama House in the Methow Valley, Washigton State, USA. Finne Architects have relied on wood for much of the interior and exterior decoration of the house. Metal, meanwhile, is present in some pieces of furniture made to measure for this home. Both materials also dominate the stair railing with suspended steps.
Modern stairs deco idea with railing in metal bars in Russia
If you like modern decorations, you will probably succumb to this Fedorova project. It was made in an interior located in Russia. A suspended staircase with white steps is surrounded by wooden and stone walls. Decorators have clearly opted for a natural approach by complementing these materials with ultra-trendy black metal bars.
White spiral staircase railing in the Netherlands
The models of spiral stair railing often have the function of emphasizing its shape. Maxwan’s Dutch project is no exception to this rule. In principle, spiral staircases are considered more dangerous than other models. However, they are practical to save space or to give an original touch to a living space. The dangers associated with this type of interior stairs make the ramp a must. In this case, it is made of white metal, which corresponds to the dominant color in the house.
Railing Model for Metal Stairs by Pitsou Kedem
Pitsou Kedem is one of Israel’s leading architectural and interior design companies. It is in Tel Aviv that she realized the project of stairs design on the image above. It is on a staircase entirely dominated by black color. The hanging steps with unconventional shape are painted in this color. The same goes for the black metal guardrail. Like other examples of metal stair railing, this one puts on a play of shadows and lights to highlight more the stairs.
Library Staircase Idea by Paz Gersh Architects
To complete a modern wooden staircase, one can also opt for a guardrail shaped open library. As with other similar interior deco models, the library performs a dual function. It delineates the staircases and at the same time provides additional storage space. In this case, the library is made to increase the size of the room. The white color and the open concept of the furniture have certainly not been chosen at random!
Interior staircase for small space with guardrail library
The bodyguard bookcase is a great idea to save space in a small interior. This is the reason why he was chosen to complete the stairs on the picture above. The idea is done by Chadbourne + Doss Architects. The decorators decided to use a suspended staircase with wooden steps. At the first level, it is completed only by a minimalist handrail. On the second floor, it is decorated with a black open storage bookcase. A simple and practical solution that would suit any modern design space.
Interior staircase guard and room separation with design bookcase in London
Some parts of London have old houses on two levels with particularly tight stairs. This is the case in this interior designed by Tamir Addadi Architecture. To give it a modern look, decorators have chosen to work with the color white. In addition to being a good solution for design decoration, white is also used to give more volume to small spaces. The library acting as guard rail is also painted white. Due to the shape of the space, it is designed to facilitate the flow of light. Part of the cabinet also functions as a room divider between a bedroom and an office room.
Staircase with Bookshelf Barrier by Hanspeter Steiger
Modern stairs are often thought to impress with their minimalist forms. The desire of designers to make this element of the decor ever more refined pushes them to reduce the number of elements that guarantee the safety of users. To remedy this problem, we put on multifunctional furniture, like the library. In this house arranged by Hanspeter Steiger the library is a practical element that also functions as a balustrade. As for the choice of colors, it is easy to see that decorators have stuck to classic solutions, such as white and wood.
Original staircase color and railing design by SHH
Sometimes the paint color of a staircase is enough to make it a decorative accent. This is the choice SHH has made by working on this interior with stairs in orange. To further emphasize the shapes, we kept the rest of the colors in the palette of neutral shades. Black and gray, as well as natural hues, draw attention to the orange steps. An illuminated handrail is presented to facilitate traffic at any time of the day or evening. The bodyguard adopts, again, the form of a design library. In a similar way to the examples already seen above, the library does not have a back to increase the brightness of the space. However, SHH thought of adding a glass surface between the books in the library and the staircase. In this way, the books are well organized and are not likely to fall on the other side of the library.
House with semi open staircase on the outside and wooden steps by Darrington Architects
Here is another idea for the installation of a suspended staircase with wooden steps. It is a creation of the company Darrington Architects is it is articulated around a semi open space on the outside. As often, the choice of material for the steps of the staircase echoes one of the floor coverings in the house. In this case, it is dark wood that is taken up by the package on the image at the top. The staircase is visually delimited by a very fine guard on one side and the wall on the other. It is also equipped with a handrail, which is a nice idea from the point of view of the safety of the inhabitants.
Crazy staircase original in Budapest by Biljana Jovanovic
The latest design and stair railing project we are visiting today is in Budapest, Hungary. It is a creation of Biljana Jovanovic and it is characterized by its very original form. It is a suspended staircase with guardrail entirely in white. To make it more interesting, Biljana Jovanovic chose to decorate it with circular holes of various sizes. This original decoration is at the origin of the name of its creation which was quickly baptized staircase Emmental! Thanks to this invention of the decorator, the staircase is not only more fun and brighter but also more attractive for children. And that’s good because it serves as a connection between several spaces, including a games room!
